Storms over the Great Plains States have significantly more lightning that never reaches the ground, an indicator of violent activity that can spawn hail and tornadoes.



MOONS OF JUPITER
January 3: Happy New Year, Europa - On the eve of another extended mission, NASA's Galileo spacecraft swooped past Jupiter's icy moon Europa today at an altitude of 351 kilometers. Another Io flyby is planned for February 22.
