Strikes an Odd Pattern Over the Plains -
A surprising pattern emerges from satellite
observations of lightning. Storms over the Great Plains States
have significantly more lightning that never reaches the ground,
an indicator of violent activity that can spawn hail and tornadoes.

New Year, Europa - On
the eve of another extended mission, NASA's Galileo spacecraft
swooped past Jupiter's icy moon Europa today at an altitude of
351 kilometers. Another Io flyby is planned for February 22.
