Space Science News Archive

On 7 January 2000, NASA announced that it was discontinuing support for the Space Science News website which had been hosted at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center since 1996. SpaceRef could not let this marvelous public website go untended - so we have created an archive of the entire website and have given it a new home.

Over the years Space Science News has become one of the brightest gems among NASA's web offerings. It sought to take the exciting research that NASA was doing - in all areas of research across the agency - and present it in a fashion that was both understandable, and approachable, to a wide audience. It took dull press releases and technical documents and enhanced them with graphics and additional web resources so as to provide visitors with a deeper appreciation of both specific events and overall areas of research.

This site quickly became a favorite of students and professionals alike around the world and, as of January 2000, had built up a mailing list with over 150,000 subscribers. Its hit rate was consistently calculated in millions. The site, and its developers, were acknowledged for their excellent work in 1999 when they were the proud recipient of a Webby Award.

The material on the NASA Space Science News website is in the public domain and portions appear online at spacescience.com. In presenting an archive of Space Science News here at SpaceRef we will endeavor to maintain the website's original editorial and graphical content exactly as it appeared when the website became inactive. However, we have removed all of the NASA and MSFC logos (we are not allowed to use them) and have removed the links to specific NASA individuals, search engines, and email addresses.

Just as we are required to remove anything that would indicate that this is an official NASA website, we will also be certain to place a comprehensive page of credits with a link on all pages of the archive so as to let all visitors know who was responsible for developing this marvelous resource.

NOTE: After considerable feedback from the public NASA decided to continue funding the Space Science News web site. This archive however will remain online for the foreseeable future.
